Quilt Drive!!

Ok, almost since the day Jillian was diagnosed I have been wanting to do this.  One of the first things that Jill received while in the PICU were 2 quilts and a blanket.  I can’t tell you what a difference having a cute little toddler quilt instead of a nasty, scratchy, big, green hospital blanket made in the feel of the room.  Everyone commented on the blankets and it just made the room cheery in spite of the gloomy situation.

Now, as I meet new people on the Hem/Onc floor at PCH I see little kids that came into the ER for a "cold" or a swollen gland or strange bruising and found themselves diagnosed with leukemia and they quickly became a hostage of the hospital.  And many parents are so in shock (with good reason) that they have trouble taking care of themselves let alone considering how to make a hospital room a little more cheery.

Everyone gets gifts and balloons.  Those help for a little while.  But what about the next time they come in?  Most people don’t take the time to decorate their child’s room if they are only going to be there 3 days.  We have LOVED having the same blanket every time we come in.  It adds some security, a bit of home to the whole inpatient experience.

I’d like to start a quilt drive.  I would give the quilts to PCH 2nd floor nurses and advise them that only Hem/Onc kids…the ones that spend ALOT of time in and out of the hospital…receive them.  That is where my heart is.  If you would like to make a quilt please e-mail me for my address.  I’d like toddler/throw size quilts because they travel well.  If you’d like to throw in a travel size pillow case I will buy the pillow. :)

Here is the catch though.  I am moving the beginning of June.  So I need the quilts by the end of May so I have time to take them down to PCH.  I will be taking them down as they arrive since we visit there every week anyway.  And if I receive any after the deadline I will just donate them to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital but I’d rather not have to pack and move them.

So, again, if you want to donate a little quilt please send them to 15663 W. Gelding Dr. Surprise, AZ 85379

I am SO excited!!  I’m going to take pictures of the quilts and me giving them to the Hem/Onc nurses!!  Thanks to all who will choose to participate!!

Apr. 3, 2007 – Great Idea!

What a wonderful idea!!! (Unfortunately I don’t quilt, I only crochet!) Another idea I have had, is to collect used teddy bears, clean them up, make them little clothes, and donate them to the individual children at the children’s ward at the local hospital. As a Mom of a child who’s going through that, do you think the teddy bear idea would be a good one, too much in the way, something they might treasure, etc.? Thanks for you imput,
Sheila

What a grand idea! I will set my Lambies to making a little throw for your project. We have never quilted before (though we sew other things), so it’ll be a learning project. Post (or send) your new address after you get there, as I doubt we’ll get it done in time for the move.
I’m glad Jillian is feeling better and that the Mannatech is helping so much! I have told a friend that has cancer about the Mannatech products. Thanks for posting so often, as I’m sure you have tons to do and must MAKE the time to update us!

I’m just a beginning quilter so I can’t help yet. Maybe I’ll be able to in the future, but I posted the info on the Homestead Front Porch so that others might get involved.

You are so right! When I saw the early pictures of Jillian in the hospital I noticed how much of a homeyness the throw quilt added. And certainly whatever bit of cheer and comfort it can provide to the patient and family, both visually and as warmth, it’s worth it.

I’ll definitely post your drive and a link on my blogs. As a chronic pain sufferer, a nice distraction can make all the difference.
God bless you and your family. And you are in my daily prayers and thoughts.
