Six Days and Counting!!

Although Jeff says “We don’t have to leave in 6 days.  What’s the hurry?”  Obviously there was a miscommunication because yesterday I could have sworn he suggested leaving early.  In any case I am hustling and getting the house packed *just in case*!!  Chiro today. Took all the kids. Great time.

Forgot to post this yesterday.  Junie vacuuming the area where the carpet was.

Jess, when we get all settled in Missouri ask me again for specifics on how we parent our difficult kids. Most of your questions can be answered **here**. We practice Extreme Tomato Staking. ;)

Christa, I am assuming since you mentioned how CLOSE we will be your intention is to visit? We could go to Silver Dollar City!! Or just hang at the house.  Do you make apple pie?

With regard to the anonymous commenter I think their question was more along the lines of “Don’t you take any responsibility for your part? Why do you keep blaming the docs?” instead of “Why didn’t you see that she had a tumor?” So that was the question I was trying to answer but I agree with Mommaofmany that it is virtually impossible to get an invisible illness diagnosed. You have to be acutely ill to get any kind of attention in the allopathic world.

Jazzy, I had a similar experience with my twins when we got them. Took them to the regular ped. Told him I wanted a referral to an allergist. He refused and sent us to a GI doc. GI doc said he didn’t think there was anything wrong and go home. Nevermind the chronic diarrhea 5 times a day times two boys!! Call the ped back again, go in again for a referral to an allergist. Finally see the allergist to be told that they had multiple allergies including peanuts and we walked out with an epi-pen!! Brilliant eh? The squeaky wheel gets the grease…or proper medical care as is the case.

Missouri is fabulously different than Arizona!! We visited back in Oct/Nov of 2006. We found a house and put an offer in. We were to close in two weeks when Jillian was diagnosed. We let the house go and put everything on hold. Speaking of hindsight…we should have moved to Missouri anyway. The researchers for PPB (what Jill had) are there. Why didn’t we move? What were we thinking? The experts were there. Our support was here. And we desperately needed that support. Now we make the move. Should the situation present itself again we’d move where the experts are and let God handle the rest.

We do have a rental house already. No pictures worth posting though. It is large and has a large lot. I expect we will be very happy there. The landlords seem wonderful as well.

Today, with the help of the kids, we sorted through all of their clothes and made up the boxes we plan to take in the little trailer. We have enough clothes for each child for one week in their own Rubbermaid container. Most of the rest of the mountain of clothes were packed into cardboard boxes to be sorted when we get there. When I have time.

I cleaned out the under the bed boxes in my room. There were four boxes and I threw out so much stuff from February that never got dealt with. All the bills were still in envelopes in a box under my bed. Thankfully the electric company sends an e-mail notice before they shut you off or we would have lost our lights back in March!! I have now consolidated 4 boxes and several miscellaneous piles that were scattered about the room into 2 boxes. Doesn’t that sound thrilling Susannah, oh queen of storage containers large and small!!

I also found many drawings and pictures from before February 2007. I got a bit weepy once or twice but never did I cry. Those days are gone and this is my “new normal”.

I took care of the 1% in my closet. Whew, that is liberating. I packed and moved the rest of the books. Finally.

More packing for me tomorrow but thankfully a gracious and giving friend has offered, quite out of the blue, to bring us dinner tomorrow!! I am thinking either she really feels bad for us because I mentioned to her that these days I am thrilled if I can get one home cooked meal in per day or she wants her DVDs back!! Either way I will be thankful to have a meal off. I bet I can get a couple boxes packed in that time!!

The box pile.  It continues to grow.

It is 7:30 and the kids are tucked snug in their beds already. I am going to go straighten the rest of the clothes chaos and then off to the tub and bed for me. Ahhh sleep, sweet sleep.

You are doing an AWESOME job of sorting and packing! You are lighting a fire under me!
I know you are going to enjoy your new home. :) I had to laugh about the last-minute course corrections, and how things change from one day to the next. Sounds so familiar.
I hope you don’t beat yourself up too much about Jillie’s treatment. You can’t be blamed for what you didn’t know! You are a wonderful mom and I’m positive Jillian is getting far better care and support from you than is typical.
I’m going to throw away all my old school notes now! (Hee hee. I saved mine too.)
I’m afraid I bought four more containers today.

awesome packing, Katie!!
It was at this time last year that I was finishing up packing our stuff to move from WY to AR… seems you are making a very similar trip (mileage wise).
I hope you enjoy the midwest. :)

I found your blog through the SL forums. It’s funny, your signature says it’s your first year using SL, and yet, your name “Team Bettendorf” seems SO familiar to me! Have you been on the SL forums for awhile? OR maybe it’s from the Raising Godly Tomatoes message board? I haven’t been there in AGES, but I used to be there.
Anyway, you have a LOVELY family. I enjoyed reading your blog this morning.

Aug. 21, 2007 – Ozark? How cool!

Posted by Kaleesha

I’m so glad you’re still moving to MO. Ozark is the very town we moved to Fredericktown from last year. I lived there nearly 17 years. What would you like to know? :) If you’re considering buying, I think my parents’ old house (they moved from there to here almost 2 years ago) may be on the market, just outside of Ozark. It’s a roomy but not too big remodeled (my parents are the best fixer-uppers in the world) farm house with tons of outbuildings and about 6.5 acres. Anyway… I think Ozark will suit you all perfectly. I can’t wait to hear more!

“Don’t you take any responsibility for your part? Why do you keep blaming the docs?”
I just want to say that I read your blog all the time and I didn’t draw the same conclusion as anonymous did. I assumed that your anger/frustration was directed more at the lack of information provided by the drs. I assumed what you were really angry about was not being more informed so that you could make better choices. Plus, hindsight is 20/20. You can’t change it now. You just have to keep doing what you are doing; trust God and make the best choices you can. I admire your parenting and faith.
BLESSINGS!!- Angela :)

Aug. 21, 2007 – Your comment about adopted children

Posted by Anonymous

It is really disheartening to hear you say that “adopted children are different than biological children”. I hope your “adopted” children don’t know or sense how you feel.

Aug. 21, 2007 – Untitled Comment

Posted by Anonymous

Children adopted at an older age ARE different than biological children, since they have typically experienced neglect, abuse, and/or trauma. It is also not unusual for them to have been exposed prenatally to drugs and/or alcohol. Our experience has been that at least initially (and maybe forever) they require a completely different style of parenting to help them recover, and hopefully thrive. Unless you have experienced this combination of having biological kids and kids adopted at an older age, it’s hard to understand.

Aug. 21, 2007 – Comment to anonymous!

“Things with adopted children are not the same as biological children. Especially during times of less supervision.”
If this is the comment anonymous is talking about it does not say Katie feels differently towards her adopted children but that adopted children handle situations differently than birth children – especially with less supervision – which is a true statement! From Tammee in MO who is also momtotwelve!

If you’re going to put rude or thoughtless comments on a blog at least have the decency to sign your name please!! Leaving those type of comments and not signing your name is basically cowardice.

Aug. 22, 2007 – sofas

Posted by Anonymous

So I have been reading your blog and I am totally curious about the sofa thing. You mentioned some sort of aversion to them, what is it? I have never heard anyone say that before and would love to hear what it is all about. Do you have any furniture or do you all just sit on the floor? How does this work? I know you are super busy right now but when you have the time I would love to hear all about it! thanks!!
