Birthing Book Reviews

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way

I think I already covered how much I liked this book.  It was very black and white and gave a lot of technical/physical explanation about how the human body works during labor.  I’m on baby number 5 and I learned things.  The pictures were from the 70s and there were a lot of unclothed women so if that bothers you you may want to skip it.  Definitely not kid friendly.  Still I overlooked those things and would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about having a baby in the future.

Birth Your Way – At a birthing center or at home

First off the title tickles me.  It assumes that you have no desire to have a hospital birth.  Or maybe it assumes that a hospital birth could never be “your way”.  In any case I found it amusing.  This book was very empowering and very much about how a woman CAN birth naturally because eh-hem, that is the way she is made.  There were stories about women’s first birth experiences in hospital and then how things were during their homebirth.  All in all a great read.

Home Birth

By the time I got to this book I had heard it all already and this book didn’t offer any new info or striking revelations.  Still a great book for someone that hasn’t already read the above two.

Birthing From Within

This book was a bit too new agey for me.  It was the first I read of all of these so it still offered insight into some of the birth process but I think if I had read some others before this one this book would have gained nothing from the reading.  There was a lot of emphasis on visualizing your baby and pregnancy art and feeling the other mothers around the world and across time that have experienced the pain you are during labor.  No thanks.  My pain is enough I don’t want to bring other women’s pain into the equation.

The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth

This covered the same info as the others that I liked and was a good read.

Gentle Birth Choices

This was a great book and came with a DVD that was uplifting as well.  It’s a bit outdated with regard to the pictures but the information was fabulous.  I borrowed this from my midwife and would highly recommend it.

  • Great! I have researched homebirth a lot, (wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!!) so I may just have to take a peek at these titles!

Just in case you didn’t see, Ellie Skees has gone home to be with Jesus. The family really needs prayer.

    God bless,
    Sheila

  • bwhahaha! My midwife gave me Birthing From Within to read and I agree with you! I’ll have my hands full with my own situation I’m sure. I am about 3 weeks behind you with #5 as well. :)

I have that Bradley Method book as well- great book, but you didn’t mention my all-time favorite book by Dr. Bradley himeslf- Husband Coached Childbirth. I LOVE that book and recommend it to all my pregnant friends.
It’s super easy reading and you could probably read it yet before birthing… unless you’re in labor by morning…
Anyway, it’s actually written to the father/husband/coach in a very conversational tone and it has the best descriptions of the stages of birth and the ins and outs of truly relaxing through contractions, and stories that are so fun to read.
I’ve read it before my last 5 births and it just does so much for me to help me mentally prepare. And I read sections to my husband to explain things I might not have thought of beforehand…
Well, I’m getting excited for you- praying all goes well.
    Enjoy them-

I also have Dr. Bradley’s book, Husband Coached Childbirth, which I read before my last baby was born (that was my 6th vaginal delivery, I’ve also had twins by c-section because of their position) Anyway, that was unfortunately the toughest delivery, by far, that I have ever had. Do you, or does any of your readers know if Dr. Bradley’s methods are supposed to work with back labor? (I have been asking around, but so far no one seems to know.) I have had back labor with all my babies, even though only two were posterior.
