Laura, can you tell me more about the IV probiotics you used?

So this is what we are thinking. We are thinking that this really was just a virus but all the other symptoms were drug induced. I have consulted with the doc that does Jillian’s IVs and he says that the elevated potassium could have been caused by the IV fluids which were….Potassium Chloride. Normally this amount of potassium would not bother anyone but it appears it bothered Jodi. They switched her bag to Sodium Chloride yesterday. The low sodium could have been caused by the diarrhea. Diarrhea will also cause colitis. And the vomiting of course is part and parcel for a virus anyway.

Today we are going to pitch the doc on stopping antibiotics (nothing grew last time they cultured) and starting probiotics and vitamin C. I also got the name of an anti-emetic (stops vomiting) called Emitrol that is sold over the counter. It is Phosphoric Acid and totally safe for babies. I had asked for an anti-emetic when we got to the hospital but was told they don’t give babies that.

I am going to the hospital soon and will stop by Mama Jean’s to get a refrigerated probiotic and Black Elderberry (doc recommended that as well. It’s antiviral) to mix with breast milk and put in the NG tube.

Warning: Sad pictures ahead.

It’s never fun to see any but newborn babies covered with hospital blankets. I hope the doctors will see the wisdom in stopping the antibiotics and beginning the OTC you are bringing. I want to hear that she’s been discharged soon!!

She’s still lovely, even pale and sick!

Hope the doctors listen to you! So sad that with all their experience and education how they can ‘miss’ so much. And how unwilling to look outside the box they are!! Glad your kiddos have been blessed with such a proactive family!!

Katie - good for you! I know it’s hard - the fighting the doctors - and you will feel exhausted pretty quickly, but don’t give up! Do what you and your hubby feel is right for your child! They - the doctors - are NOT GOD!!! (You might have to remind them in case they forget!)

God will give you two the wisdom that you need to care for your child. That’s just the way it works. Trust Him, try to rest peacefully in the knowledge that He is in control. Trust your “gut” - you are The Mama!

And please give gentle squeezes and soft kisses to Jodi from us. I’m praying for you all.

I am thrilled to hear you are getting some answers on Jodi! Praise God!

I unfortunately do not remember the specifics on my hospital stay (cardiac, gall bladder and pancreatic episode) I was drugged heavily. I do remember each day (4of 5) they hung a small bag of probiotics as I was unable to eat and this was used to protect the gut. My last day, I ate and was given oral probiotics and went home with another 3 days worth.

For my grandson, it is the same with each of his admissions he is given IV probiotics and when he can eat we give him the refrigerated with yogurt. We purchase the oral and not the hospital giving it to him.

I went through my hospital records to locate the name of what was given to me and it does not have the IV meds listed.

I hope that helps and the doctor will be able to get what you need. At least if you can get some good flora via the NG tube.

Blessings and comfort Katie, we all are praying for Jodi (and answers!)

Katie, we are praying for Jodi as well, especially that the docs will cooperate with you and you don’t have to go all the way to KC. Like everyone else, I admire you SO much for fighting for your kids, and if I am ever in that situation with any of mine, I hope I can be just like you. Prayers and blessings and comfort and prayers and wisdom and prayers to you….Veronica

Katie, I wanted to let you know that I am praying for baby Jodi and your family. My 2 yo was just released from Childrens Hospital in SD, CA and I know how precious the prayers of my friends, family and even strangers were for me during the time he was there. Although I am a stranger to you please know that you and your website have been a tremendous blessing to me. God bless Jodi and you and Jeff and all your dear children.
