Update on the Property - Part V

April 18, 2008

After everyone got sufficiently wet we decided to take another check up on the building site. I had been unable to get pictures earlier because Jodi is so demanding. But here you can see how big the site is.

The footprint is about 40×24. There will be 3 levels (2880 sq ft) plus an addition off the front of 540sq ft. That gives us a total of 3420 sq ft.

When we had been up there earlier (before getting drenched) there had been some gunfire. We all whirled around to find a man sitting on his tailgate in the middle of the road shooting his gun off into the woods. Jeff walked to the edge of our building site and proceeded to snap photos of the man. He quickly changed his mind about breaking the law (shooting from the roadway is illegal) and left.

When we had been at the building site again for a bit the cranky neighbors appeared and proceeded to dump stuff on their burn pile and light it. As it turns out that burn pile is actually on our property. There was another neighbor visiting us at the time and let us know that the cranky neighbors have been in trouble with the law before. He suggested that Jeff document them using our property. Just in case.

So Jeff started snapping photos. He was pretty far away. Visible but not nearly in their face. The girlfriend of the neighbor (btw, we went and introduced ourselves when we first bought the place and they were friendly and nice) yelled over to Jeff “Would you like us to pose for you?” and then “May I ask why you are taking pictures?” To which Jeff offered no answer.

Then Matt, who is actually the owners son and the one that has been in trouble before, grabbed his shot gun and started firing into the air. His girlfriend yelled at him but he continued to fire off a total of 3 shots. We just stood there and stared over at him.

Here is how the property is laid out. Our property line runs along the red line on the bottom and the purple triangular-ish shape on the sides. The blue line is the Little Pine Creek and the blue X is where we go play by the water. The red X is where we are building. There is an elevation change of about 40 ft from the blue X to the red X. Do you see the yellow triangle area? That is the area that is our pasture but the neighbors have claimed as their own.

We just have a peace about it and think that God will work the whole thing out. As pro-active as we usually are we just feel this is something that we want to wait out and see what happens. In the meantime the building continues.

I am so sorry you have to deal with stinky neighbors. I pray the the Lord will work through you and help these neighbors realize how they are acting…….Kill them with kindness!!! Your property looks beautiful! I wish I could be there right now enjoying the sounds of the outdoors! Have a great weekend!

Sounds like rednecks/hillbillies to me. In the end, they’ll probably back off.
Later on they might even be friendly.

The overview was very helpful to those of us who are visual…thank you so much for sharing that. Now i “get it.” It looks like great property…i can totally see why you want to live there.

Hey, did y’all feel the earthquake this morning?

So when are you fencing??!! (Just kidding, I know that is a lot of property!) We moved to rural Florida. At first the guns were a little scary, but now, that one particular neighbor who was rough at first would be the first one I would call if there is ever any type of trouble!

    Hang in there!

I am sorry the neighbors are so yucky. I hope things work out soon. How unwelcoming. I hope it wasn’t very upsetting for the children.
    Blessings,

You are braver than I– I don’t think I could stay there– I’d be too scared!!!

    YIKES!!

Shooting guns like that?? No thanks!!

We have had our share of bad neighbors, too.
I think you have a great attitude about it.
“Love your neighbor…. but don’t let them get away with breaking the law.” ;-)

I pray that you get everything resolved peacefully.

I’m sure you are probably aware of this, but you should know that you may run into problems with “adverse possession”. They are “hostilely” using your land and if you don’t nip it in the bud, you could run into problems down the road with them being able to legally claim it as theirs. My husband’s the lawyer & I don’t know a whole lot about it more than just the concept, but I just thought I’d alert you to research it if you don’t already know.

I wouldn’t wait too long either, but as the Lord leads…
