Nature Study

Monday we had our first Nature Study. We went to a local park and everyone parked themselves somewhere to draw something from nature.
The day was idyllic with plenty of drawing material, great weather, the ever present breeze and great company.
Everyone worked hard.
Even the little ones enjoyed the study.
Eventually everyone convened on the place where I was sitting. Junie sat on my dandelion. She kept telling me it is not supposed to be drawn because it is "just a weed" but I kept telling her it isn’t just a weed, it is salad. I thought Jodi would be bothered by the wind but she had a blast. See her on my lap? She was trying to roll away and play on the grass.
This was Donut’s first time on a merry-go-round.

They spun until they felt sick.
They swung until they touched the clouds.
It was Donut’s first time in a big boy swing.
He loved it.
It was Jodi’s first time in a stroller.
She loved it as well.
I am liking this Nature Study stuff. I am also liking our new curriculum, or lack there of, very much. Soon after this last picture of Jodi we were scared out of the park by some public school kids. I’ll have that story and a controversial poll later today.
I did make that liver and I did think it was eat-able. I did force my children to eat it because I just read THIS article. And if you are smart you will too.

I would really like to see what school looks like with your new curriculum. How are you picking the books to go along w/ the timeline? Are the kids each doing separate timelines or do you have one that the family adds on to? Wall timeline, notebook or something else?

Now THAT is what I call school! Real learning! Awesome stuff. So glad you’re breaking loose of having to be confined by anyone’s curriculum or program! How fantastic is that, eh? :D

I can’t find a merry-go-round like that around here anywhere! I have such fond memories of them as a kid.
Nature studies are fun! I’m glad you all had a good time.

I love that site you linked on eating liver. I just read the “throw away the sunscreen.” Wow, we just can’t believe anything anymore.
It is so beautiful in the pictures you posted. I bet you all are loving the greenery of spring in Missouri!
Take Care

Looks like a great day of school.
So does that mean that you aren’t doing Sonlight anymore?

Katie, can I just ever so politely encourage you to check up on cholesterol and liver? My understanding is that cholesterol is produced in the liver. I don’t eat liver on the recommendation of my doctor.
Oh, and I was in the unpopular group on the poll.
