More Chickens.
You can expect to see more and more chicken pictures in the future. They are getting so cute and big and fun and cute and fun. If you ever get tired of pictures of chickens you let me know. I don’t know why I just told you to let me know because I’ll do what I want. I think you knew that already so I’m sure you were not taking me seriously anyway. Do you ever take me seriously?
We interrupt your regularly scheduled program to show you this.
This is Jeff’s new toy. But he is all about work and the responsibility of home rentership and so he had to have this nifty tool that makes mowing the lawn twice weekly a joy instead of a chore. Sorta. And if you don’t believe me that the lawn needs mowed twice a week then you have never lived in Missouri. It’s so not fair. In Phoenix we mowed twice a year!! Serious!! Of course the rest of the time we were watering the grass so whatever. But we’ll come back to this picture.
The point is that Jeff was mowing while I took the following pictures. Once again I found myself laughing my fool head off at the winged animals that live in my back yard.
First everything was calm. The chickies and duckies were hanging out, roosting, scratching, pecking. All the things that fowl do.
Then, like I said, my industrious husband commenced to mow.

And the feathers went a flying. Not literally.

Have you ever seen a duck run? You should. At least once in your life you should see a duck run. If I ever figure out how to post videos I’ll show you. Because you’d laugh. Really. It’s better if there are more ducks. And if it is morning time and they are hungry then they quack and well…it brings joy to even the worst day. I may move some ducks into my master bedroom with me.

The chickens ran to the other side of the yard and hid behind a storage container. Cheep, cheep.
Hello chickies. Come out and play?
Here are the ducks dropping in uninvited.
Excuse us. Do you mind if we come in?

Does this place have a basement?
Do you have any tea on?
Perhaps some biscuits?

Where is that machine? Is the coast clear?
No shoving!!
Goodness, how’d I get to be the look out?
Stop laughing you ugly human.
Human? Is it safe?

But it was not safe yet. Run. Run for your lives!! And some of the ducks were trapped inside the chicken tractor. This reminds me of the other day when I invited myself and a friend to a mutual friend’s home (I do this quite often. Now you’ve been warned) and out of nowhere came this storm. Then friend and I were stuck at mutual friend’s house glued to the weather radio in anticipation of a tornado warning. It was all very exciting in a heart palpitating way. Kind of like being chased by a lawn mower. The consequences are the same anyway. You know, lots of swirling and death and dismemberment. It’s funny how nature mimics real life. Amazing. Excuse me while I ponder.
Some animals took it all in stride. I went inside.
Hello Poultry. What’s the big hubbub?
Now the yard looks great and all the animals still have all of their appendages. I love this country-ish life.

Yep, watching ducks and chickens run IS entertainment! Did you know that they used chickens running for the digital imaging of the dinosaurs running in Jurassic Park? I never watch our chickens run any more without thinking of that…
Haha, that’s great! Chickens are fun to watch. The dog and chick picture is classic. We just bought 8 more chicks, so that brings us to 24. We now have 12 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Leghorns, 4 Barred Rocks, and 4 Aracaunas. We still haven’t built the coop. We have 3 cages that they jump back into when the sun goes down. We’re planning a possible 10′ by 22′ wood shed like structure for them. We’ll see how that goes anyway…. :)
lol! I wonder what all your neighbors think about your new farming adventure! :-)
I tell you, I just LOVE your new coop, that is just fantastic! Makes me want one :)
Have fun with your farm :)
Love,
Chas
You are just down right hilarious, Katie!! Thanks for sharing the joy! =)
That was hilarious! I love the new chicken coop too? Do you have directions? We’ve thought about getting chickens, but the thought of making a chicken coop that looks decent is overwhelming, but I love yours!
Are they no city laws about having chickens there? Lucky you! We can have 12. That’s it. No rooster, just 12 little ole’ chickens. But 12 is better than nothing I guess. :)
That is too funny!
Maybe you should get some goats, too – because then Jeff wouldn’t need to mow as much! ;-)
I wish we could have chickens too, but our town has a “no livestock within city limits” law. (…which is probably a good thing because my DD is ALL about ponies right now!)
Blessings,
Michelle
LOL! That was so funny!
I really want some chickens. I don’t think my DH would ever want a riding mower, however. That is just not his bag. I guess that’s a good thing for the chickens!
Hi! Just found your blog after Googling “Goat Pen”. This post is hilarious. We have 8 hens of our own and I remember fondly their “awkward” teenage phase when their fuzz was being replaced by feather. Our ladies are almost old enough to start laying. It’s very exciting…
We’re getting ready to welcome to pygmy goats in a few weeks. Good stuff.
