The Big Move – Part Two
We still are not completely moved in. It appears that 14 people can possess a lot of stuff. But it is all stuff we need, right? In the meantime we are so enjoying the wide open spaces. Just the other day the neighbors cows appeared on the fence line way down at the end of the pasture. The kids trekked on down there to get a good look at the bovine creatures.
Look at those little specks so far away from the protective arms of their mother. But I didn’t have to worry because chances were good that no bad guys or perverts would be jumping out of the bushes. I am told the cows were friendly enough.
The chickens are definitely enjoying their new found freedom. No more problems with chickens in the neighbors’ yards. If these chickens wander over to the neighbors here then they have to be freewheeling souls with traveling in their blood and who am I to stop a chicken with a dream. I couldn’t.
"Hey, my human, we are ever so grateful that you brought us to this utopia. Please say we will never leave."
Moving on. We have weeds here. Did I mention this already? Lots of weeds. This here is chicory and you can do all kinds of things with it. Let’s work with nature here. We have an abundance of chicory and Queen Anne’s Lace and cockle burs. Did I mention the cockle burs already?
Oh, and grapes!! We have two grape vines. They kids are having a blast picking grapes and squashing them and peeling them and feeding them to chickens and making plans to make jelly and wine and oh ya, they eat some too.
See, they do eat them.
Oh yummy. I’m not a big grape eater but they certainly do look delish.
Ah, life is good for all on the farm.
Of course, I don’t think this cat has done dishes by hand three times a day either.

aaahhh….. gorgeous! Well worth the wait, I’m sure!
Oh my goodness… how excited I am for you!!! I really am… I am also a bit jealous of the good pasture land you already have. One of these days our land will be ready for pasture… I PRAY!!!!
And I looked it up… You guys are still 9 hours away.
One day maybe. :)
Looking forward to hearing more.
Love,
Chas
Oh… we are doing dishes by hand three times a day here too — but not for 14 folks… only 7. Whew… makes me LOVE my electric dishwasher! I LOVE it… absence makes the heart grow fonder, I hear.
So — what do you do with chicory?
Can your chickens out run the coyotes? Just wondering…
Hi Katie,
Is this the same place you purchased and scary people with guns were hanging out or did you decide to buy a different piece of property? It looks really great. Fruit and veg auctions are big in Lancaster County PA. You bought some great looking produce and the price was very good. Prices are much higher in PA for everything. That’s why my checkbook is sitting on my desk crying. Can I borrow Jodie to cheer myself up. She is toooooooooo cute.
Love the cat picture! Now how about answering everyone’s questions????
who am I to stop a chicken with a dream. Lol You crack me up! Enjoy your new home
Andrea
Man! That looks nice! I would love to see more pictures! What happened with the other property? Did you have neighborhood issues in the rental?
Cecelia
Good gracious, I’m all for country living, but not without a dishwasher! And a chicken with a dream, *snort* you crack me up :D
Back when we lived in a “Master Planned Community” (think: super suburbia), we did have grapevines (go figure)! I never could quite figure out when they were good though… Just when I thought “Today, I will pick some grapes” the dern squirrels and other critters would wipe the vine clean!
LOVELY!! The cat taking a sun nap in the plant barrel was adorable! The grapes sound delicious! I loved seeing Junie and Jonah’s faces while holding/eating their grapes. Could life get any better for a kid?! =)
Katie,
I am soooooo confused. I, too, thought you were building a house near the creek by the scary guys. Did you sell that land? What have I missed?
BTW your chickens look very happy in their new home… your kids, too.
You’re a braver woman than me, putting up all that stuff right after a move.
I picked apples the other day and have yet to do anything with them.
I feel your pain on the washing by hands. Seems like all I do nowadays.
