Turtlology.

Jeff, Jessica and June found this guy crossing the road.

They rescued (??) him and brought him to our house.

He gets a lot of love although I’m not sure he appreciates it.

And he’ll never be hot because he has is own personal sprinkler.

Doesn’t he look comfy?

"Oh wait turtle."

"Not so fast."

"Come back here."

"Gotcha."

Look at that interesting reptilian specimen.
He has red eyes so he is a boy. I counted this as school, yes I did.

What a pretty tortoise!
Oye, she’s so cute playing with him!
My friend loves turtles and made a turtle “sanctuary” in her back yard. It has a little concrete water “slide”, a box for the babies, etc. It’s really neat!
Have you named him yet???
Beth
I love the boy digging the hole in the yard in the back ground. MAN’S WORK! LOL What’s the hole for? :P
GREAT turtle pics… thanks for sharing!
Nice… he is prettier than the turtles we usually find around here.
At least you don’t get nasty comments about what is school and what isn’t. I took my kids to the pet store and we read all the info about the animals, what they like, what they eat, how they grow and such and posted it one day in pictures… and then at the end, I too said, Yep, this was school.
Someone left me a comment letting me know it was no such thing… How sad it is for people to not know you can learn ANYWHERE.
Have fun learning. :)
Love,
Chas
We “collected” turtles when I was young all the time. We even had one lay an egg. Unfortunately in was in her water bowl, so it got water logged and never hatched. :( Poor mama. You can tell the age of the turtle by the number of rings on it’s shell. Just like a tree. :)
You may have a female turtle on your hands. The best way to tell the gender of a turtle is by the bottom of its shell. If the bottom is flat they are female, if it is concave that it is a male. The male shell caves in so that it can mate with the female turtle.
It looks like the turtle is in for a long loving life. :)
Turtles are a lot of fun. I feel sorry for city kids who don’t get to play with turtles, bugs etc.
Do you know to watch out for snapping turtles? I don’t think they live in Arizona, but they do in the Midwest. Don’t want anyone learning about them the hard way. Besides, you need all your fingers for playing with nice turtles, frogs and oh, yes, the mud. :)
Wow, he’s gorgeous! Course I’m a turtle lover, we have 2 aquatic turtles and I’m looking into adopting a tortoise soon. Just make sure your kids wash their hands after touching him real good!
I thought only females had a flat underbellie in land tortoises. Or is that just specific to the ones we have here? I have never seen one with red eyes. How neat!
When I used to visit my grandparents in Oklahoma in the summer (from California), my grandpa would take me out on the back roads to find turtles. It was one of my favorite things to do.
I was thrilled to pieces a couple of weeks ago when I found a box terrapin crossing the road near my house. Alyssa played with it for a while and then we released it into the woods by our house. :)
Very neat!…and he looks like he is ’smiling’ in those last two photos!
How cute! My Mom found a turtle crossing the road too!!! And it became her pet. She made a habitat in her backyard out of an old empty bathtub. My children thought it was so cool!
Katie~ A friend of mine goes to your church…. I sent her your blog when Jillian was first diagnosed with cancer. We’ve both prayed for Jillian all this time. (She just recently moved to MO. & just realized you guys were the “Team Bettendorf” family!) Did she tell you at church on Sunday? What a small world! I wish I could meet you & your family too! It sounds like you guys have a really neat church where the whole family stays in the service. I think that’s so cool that Gretchen got to meet you guys & goes to your church. What a small world!
Well, I gotta go! Have a great day!
Love, Jen (Mom to 8 “J’s”)
This was great!! Not only do my boys and I love turtles but Judah wanted to read your captions over my shoulder…so, of course, I counted it as school too… ;)
