Roughin’ It.
One of the things my kids have been talking about doing since before we ever left Arizona is “surviving” out in the forest using only their survival knowledge and a few small tools. So far I have nixed the idea because well…I like my children and I’d like them to stay alive a little longer.
But cooking over an open fire. Now that is a family event. Even two and five year olds can get in on the fun. Seriously. But we will talk about fire safety another time.

It was Jenna’s idea. I had to help them start the fire (thank you Bic lighter) and provide the pot (thank heavens they didn’t burn the handle off, what was I thinking?). They foraged wild onions outside and carrot, celery and rice from inside.

Resourceful little buggers.

They slaved over it several hours and then they enjoyed the fruit vegetables of their labor.

I’m told it was yummy. And that’s school too!!

It looks like they had a great time! My kids would love to do that. :)
We used to have wild onions, but now we have chickens. Soon we’ll have onion flavored eggs. lol
Smart kids!
That is too fun. I love it when my kids do things like that. :)
Now… what’s in the box? ;)
Love,

Fun! My blessings want to spend the night out in the tent but we have put that off until next year. Their Mother is too chicken to let them do it!
Oh what fun! We have been working on the same type of activities!
Yummy! This looks like fun. Clever kiddos! (Just a tip here in case you ever comment on anyones blog in the UK – don’t use that b*gger word – it is REALLY bad over here!!! When I first got married I used to use it as a term of endearment – then I used it to describe the daughter of the pastor and the elder’s son who were playing together! YIKES!!!!!! Was I in BIG trouble! It is swearing here and VERY rude! I never made that mistake twice! LOL!)
Looks yummy and resourceful!
You could let them build a shelter out of branches and leaves to hang out in.
My boys like to do that and sleep out there in the backyard.
More good times at the Bettendorf Cafe. :) Looks yummy!
Do it again in the winter and you can call it Valley Forge- how’s that for history at your finger tips?
Katie, I’m going to send my kids to your house! Your kids are having way too much fun…living on a farm…playing with the animals…finding interesting science stuff…cooking outside on a little fire. Awesome times. I’m so glad you were able to get your farm…one of these days I’m heading back to the country again. Til then… I’ll just have to dream. Hugs to all of you, Aunt Bea
