Bye-Bye Garage Door
Although I loved having my open air living room and the fabulous ventilation and wonderful supervisory situations it afforded there was one small problem. As I said before garage doors are not air tight, even the best garage doors, it just is not possible, or so it seems. This is great when the it is a fabulous 70 degrees outside but when it dips below 30, well then there are some issues. Mainly the one of cold air coming into the house.

I guess Jeff had had enough of the drafty living room and decided to rectify the situation. It all began the night before. And Jeff made plans to disassemble the house and fill in the holes. Early the next day the next afternoon Jeff ran to the hardware store (we have one here in Mansfield) and retrieved the necessary lumber. And out came the garage door.

Here is the hole that was left by the garage door and you can see my men working diligently on the framework. By this point Jeff was asking me at 30 minute (and then 15 minute) intervals what time it was due to the early closing of the hardware store and the fact that it appeared that Jeff didn’t have all of the materials to finish this project.

He did end up running back to pick up more wood. Open air living.

There is still a pile of rubble in front of the house from the stairway project. You see, Jeff and I have different priorities. I’d like the piles of wood to be picked up and stacked elsewhere (preferably in an orderly fashion). He likes them just the way they are. Then again he is the one doing all the heavy lifting here and he even cooks dinner once in awhile so I try not to complain too much. I just use the other doors and avoid that side of the house. And I’ll be glad that my wall is closed in. I do enjoy being warm, after all.

Then again looking past the rubble here is my view. I don’t know if having a huge hole in my living room is such a big deal after all.

Alas, it is done. And I am happy about it.

Now it’s time to tear it back down and put a mud room there.

Are you going to have any windows in that room? Seems like it would be really dark!~
Umm…and I was going to suggest Jeff make you built in bookshelves where the garage door was. That “framing” is perfect for it! (At least until you get your mudroom!)
Jeff rocks! :) So glad you don’t have an open air living room with winter a’comin’. :)
Amanda, Windows are in the plan.
It looks great!
Rich said using a nail gun is cheating!
Tell Rich he is welcome to come over here with his hammer. :)
I was going to ask the same thing about a window! I would have thought that would be a perfect spot and timing to add in some light and a view. Although, it does require more in the finances. :~/
