Fall Garden Revisited
So we planted a little garden with really no idea what we were doing. Jacob needed some hard work to do and that meant that I acquired a small garden spot. John and I went to work and planted six 12 x 2 beds.
These are cabbages or broccoli …you’d have to ask John the specifics. He remembers these types of things. We maybe have 10 of these. Not enough to feed us all but great for not doing much at all here. Oh, and there are lots of weeds. Lots.

Look at our different lettuces. We love lettuce!!

More lettuce. Red lettuce. After I took this picture I pulled a bunch of weeds while I was on the phone with a friend.

The cabbages (??) and radishes. We have about 20 radishes.

Snow peas. Eventually they will need a trellis.

And our sparse spinach

Here is our highly technical and fancy system for keeping our plants alive in the freezing cold. We throw some sheets of plastic over the entire thing. We are such forward thinkers. Plastic, on the ground. Ha!! Who knew it was so easy!!
Now get out and plant something!!

those weeds look like chick weed. which you can eat! they are yummy. We ate them this spring while we were cleaning out our garden there were many weeds that were etable. chick weed is yum though. dandelion is bitter and plantain is not so yummy but okay…. but eat the chickweed! We had chicken/chickweed caesar with homemade caesar… it was to die for!
Aside from being edible, chickweed is loved by my chickens, and both chickweed and plantain are medicinal herbs. I use plantain in my skin healing salve.
You might put the trellis for the peas in now. If you wait until they are bigger, you might disturb or damage the roots which will cut down on the plants production.
I’m putting in a winter garden this week!
I would love for you to come to our blog and see our garden beds and polytunnel greenhouse. You are doing great on your garden just thought we could give you a few ideas.
