Pattern Blocks
When the little kids do school they do some worksheets and we read some books but the thing they look forward to the most is pattern blocks.

I simply googled “pattern blocks” and came up with several websites that offer free patterns.

I display one on the computer screen and let them create the picture.

I count it as math.

Aha!
Thank you, Katie.
Guess what my littles will be doing for math next week?
I suspect the big bros. will want to be in on the action.
Are you using wood pattern blocks and if so, where did you find them? I’ve seen lots of foam or plastic pattern blocks, but only found wood ones from Doug and Melissa(?).
My kids LOVE these! They’ve started stacking them vertically, fitting the shapes together to make walls!
We have foam ones. And some of them have teeth marks from the littles, LOL.
I second that … where did you find wooden ones? And does anyone know where to find wooden ones with non-toxic paint?
Mine are plastic. :)
Laura N.,
I have no idea if these have non-toxic paint. When it comes down to it 130 pieces doesn’t seem like a whole lot…and they’re not cheap.

Katie, Please, please, please more about how you school your littles.
Kelly, Here is a post about preschool. http://teambettendorf.com/2008/02/26/our-school-day-part-i/
Although we are not using Sonlight anymore we follow the same routine.
I found these blocks at Rainbow Resource Center for $22.50 and plan on using them as part of our Pre-K and K curriculum. They are expensive, but you are paying for the wood.

We love pattern blocks here at our house, too.
(AND…my kids have the same PJ’s that Jillie does! They were so excited to see someone else wearing them!) ;-)

Katie,
I loved the February 26th post. It really helped me a lot. I’m guessing that you often incorporate new things and I’m also curious what they do…so I like the insight into what your school days look like. That’s why I like updates and new input.
Next, I went out tonight and looked at pattern block sites, but didn’t find one with bunches of patterns on it. (Keep in mind that I’m still learning the best terms to put into Google to get results/) Would you please share what site you found so many patterns on? Thanks.
Kelly, try googling “pattern block pictures” or “tangram pictures” and here is a sight where you can make your own pictures for them to copy. :)

I hear ya on the googling. I usually have Jeff do searches for me. I’m not a good googler. :)
This is what is showing on my post. http://www.kellyskindergarten.com/math/math_activities.htm
Here is another place to get wood pattern blocks. It is the same set as from the Rainbow resources link, but $10 cheaper :) I don’t know why there is no pic, maybe because they are on back order? Just thought I’d share.

Opps, I just remembered I I don’t know how to post a link in a comment. I bet Katie can fix that ;)
We love pattern blocks too!
We have used pattern blocks for a long time and I never thought to look on-line for patten block pictures to copy. Silly me. I even BOUGHT some pattern block sheets at the last convention I went to. Again, silly me. Thanks for the info!

We have those… they ‘count’ as Art, Math, Science, Oh wait, we unschool so it doesnt matter LOL… and we live in AZ and there are no requirements DUH
Anyone looking for ’school’ supplies, seek out a good teachers store or educators store in your area, they will have tons of stuff, get on the mailing list, get coupons, and shop year end sales…
I knew there was a reason I didn’t order that book of patterns! And I usually google search for ‘free’ stuff first before actually buying anything! Silly me! Thanks for the ‘reminder’ and the pattern links!
Awesome idea! stealing this for tommorow.
