Real Food Wednesdays – What Are You Planting?

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.

And cement blocks.  Don’t forget the blocks.

Today’s Real Food Wednesday is hosted by Ann Marie (aka: Cheeseslave) and the theme is What Are You Planting?

I finally got my tomatoes in the dirt yesterday.  I am SO behind compared the O’Melays and I get plant envy every time I read their blog.  But I am starting to catch up.  Yesterday morning it poured down rain.  I thought for sure the day was lost.  But then, in true Midwest fashion the clouds disappeared all of a sudden and it was warm and sunny without a cloud in the sky.

So Jessica and I slogged through the mud (which was dissipating quickly because the ground here drains fast) and planted an entire bed with 8 different kinds of tomatoes.  We will transplant them when they are big enough to do so.  Today we will get the rest of our cold weather plants out…like cabbage and broccoli and spinach and peas and…wow, we’ll be busy.

Now say a cheer with me.

Rah!  Rah!!

Sis Boom Bah!!

Grow!!  Grow!!

Grow, Tomatoes, Grow!!!

Thank you very much.

And guess what!!  I’m now the proud owner of a discer AND I ordered blue potatoes to plant.

  • how fun! you aren’t behind, we are a little early with our seedlings because of the way the moon phases fell. the beds look great!

  • I don’t think you are behind either! We usually wait till mid to end of April so we have warmer and more light in the day. Right now we are working on getting our chicks. We sould be getting them this morning! I hope they make it! We have never had them before and I have many kids here during the day to torment them. :( Your beds look nice! You all are inspiring!

  • We are behind too. Here I am in Zone 9 and my seeds have only been in the ground for 2 weeks. I like how you put hoops on your beds. I may do that next year. No need for it anymore.

  • We are always behind in the garden:) I should have put lettuce, broccoli, spinach etc out a week or two ago, but the beds aren’t ready yet. We need to somehow fence in the garden to keep the chickens out. We’ve gotten started on that, but the ground is rock hard from lack of rain here, so I think we’ll get an auger attachment for the tractor:) Will make all the fencing go much faster.

  • I’m not even thinking about tomatoes yet. Some of my cold weather stuff is in like lettuce, peas and radishes, but I’m going to do all my warm weather stuff from starts in another month and a half :)
I need to put up hoops or something so I can keep the dogs out… it’s chicken wire on the soil right now but that won’t work after things start sprouting!

  • So far we’ve gotten in strawberries, blackberries, potatoes, kale, onions, cabbage, beets, peas, lettuce, chard, and radishes. We’re zone 6, so we have to wait awhile for planting to begin in earnest.
