Hat tip to Kristin.  The best 10 minutes I’ve spent in a long time.

Pattern Blocks

When the little kids do school they do some worksheets and we read some books but the thing they look forward to the most is pattern blocks.

I simply googled “pattern blocks” and came up with several websites that offer free patterns.

I display one on the computer screen and let them create the picture.

I count it [...]

Art Class

Not too long ago we had some great weather.  On great weather days we skip formal, sit down schooling.  There are enough rain days here that if we only school on rain days we will meet our 2 week 500 hour requirement.  Isn’t that wonderful?
On the other hand, sometimes these silly kids school themselves!  [...]

Public Schools Again

Part 1 is here.
Samantha said:
First, you seem to always group all public schools in the same lump and that is just not possible. Just as i can’t lump all homeschoolers in the same lump, because i “could” categorize all h/s’ers as lazy moms whose children never learn to read and they are in 7th [...]

Public School At Its Finest

I know we’ve been here before and we’ve done the public school vs. homeschool thing but I want to open the discussion again with the inclusion of the evidence below.  Watch the video and tell me how disturbing you think it is.

Now those that send their kids to public school by choice can tell [...]

Roughin’ It.

One of the things my kids have been talking about doing since before we ever left Arizona is “surviving” out in the forest using only their survival knowledge and a few small tools.  So far I have nixed the idea because well…I like my children and I’d like them to stay alive a little longer.
But [...]

School Is In – Part II

Edit: I fixed the pictures.
Does anyone know what this is?  Anyone?  Anyone? Bueller?

Is it Chamomile?  I need to pull some and dry it.  Where are my children?

Black Swallowtail Caterpillar.

It will turn into this.

Tent caterpillar.

Turns into this.  And then it will fly in your hair as you are trying to unlock your front door [...]

School is in.

A Leaf Bug.

It looks like a leaf.

Leopard Moth Caterpillar.

Bristly and black with red stripes.

It doesn’t sting but it is very shy.

Someday it will be this.  Very appropriate name, doncha think?  Except I think, if I were God, that I would make the caterpillars look like the moth they will become.  That is only fair right?  [...]

Turtlology.

Jeff, Jessica and June found this guy crossing the road.

They rescued (??) him and brought him to our house.

He gets a lot of love although I’m not sure he appreciates it.

And he’ll never be hot because he has is own personal sprinkler.

Doesn’t he look comfy?

"Oh wait turtle."

"Not so fast."

"Come back here."

"Gotcha."

Look at that interesting reptilian [...]
